The Pocono Mountains, or Poconos, is a gorgeous region in northeastern Pennsylvania filled with forested peaks, rushing rivers, impressive waterfalls and much more. Just a short drive from New York and New Jersey, it’s a perfect destination for vacationers seeking fun and relaxation.
This amazing area is not only known for its scenic beauty but is also surrounded by small towns that are rich in culture and history. Learn how the Poconos got its name from the Munsee word Pokawachne, which translates to “creek between two hills.”
From horseback riding to historic architecture, there's truly something for everyone in the Poconos. Here's a list of 10 ideas for a Poconos vacation you won’t forget.

Here you’ll find many hiking trails that lead you through lush, green forests, alongside lakes, and through mountains with inspiring views. One great trail to check out while visiting Hickory Run is the Shades of Death trail (don’t be intimidated by the name). Named after the challenging terrain that settlers in this area endured long ago, this trail will lead you alongside a delightful creek and past the famous Stametz Dam waterfall.
Another noticeable attraction in this park is the huge 16-acre Hickory Run Boulder Field that is completely surrounded by evergreens. A National Natural Landmark, it will leave you in complete awe. You can also play a game of disc golf or just relax at the beach and take a dip in the lake on a hot day.
