In her book The Death and Life of Great American Cities, Jane Jacobs challenged the prevailing view that a city’s success should be measured solely by its skylines, transit systems, and economic density.
Decades later, a new analysis offers a new perspective on one aspect of her broader critique: many of America’s largest cities have made regular access to the natural world increasingly difficult.
The Nature Deficit Index evaluates the 50 most populous U.S. cities by cross-referencing park acreage, air quality, commute times, workplace trends, and distance to wilderness. Its findings upend conventional wisdom. Wealthy coastal cities, often recognized for their environmental policies, do not necessarily deliver meaningful everyday access to nature. Meanwhile, several heavily industrialized high-desert border cities are emerging as unexpected sanctuaries for outdoor life.

Southern California’s Atmospheric Cage
On paper, Southern California is a geographic paradise flanked by the San Gabriel and Santa Monica Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. In reality, the built environment renders these natural assets frustratingly out of reach. The Los Angeles basin lies within a single, shared airshed that recorded 35 days of unhealthy or hazardous air quality last year, among the highest totals of any major U.S. metropolitan region.
When the air is unhealthy for more than a month each year, local green spaces lose their utility. Many residents spend much of the day moving between air-conditioned homes, congested freeways, and enclosed workplaces.
Nature remains visible on the horizon, yet functionally out of reach.
Time Poverty and the Vertical Monolith
For architectural giants like Chicago (Rank 3) and New York (Rank 6), the biggest obstacle to accessing nature is not a lack of green space, but the time it takes to reach them.
New York, despite a respectable 17.4 percent parkland coverage, ranks near the top of the Nature Deficit Index largely because of its nation-leading average commute of 44.7 minutes. Chicago fares little better: its residents endure a 36.7-minute average commute and must drive 52 miles to reach significant protected wilderness.
As Jane Jacobs observed in her critique of mid-century urban planning, cities must serve the daily lives of ordinary people rather than abstract ideals of density or efficiency. In these two cities, when residents spend nearly an hour and a half trapped in transit between work and home, their discretionary time for outdoor recreation is substantially reduced.
Meaningful access to the outdoors increasingly requires additional time, mobility, or financial resources.
The Sun Belt Sprawl and the Digital Anchor
In the American Sun Belt, the nature deficit often stems from rapid municipal expansion that treats green infrastructure as an afterthought. Fort Worth (Rank 4) and neighboring Arlington (Rank 10) sit more than 100 miles from the nearest significant wilderness area. The sprawling Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex has steadily replaced greenfield landscapes with suburban development, leaving fewer nearby natural areas for residents to escape into.
Beyond urban form, the index points to a more contemporary influence: the unintended consequences of the remote-work revolution. In tech-oriented cities like Seattle (Rank 14), where knowledge-sector employment is especially concentrated, the rise of remote work has quietly reshaped daily life. Seattle reports the nation’s highest work-from-home rate at 31.3 percent, followed by Washington, D.C. (29.4 percent) and Atlanta (26.6 percent).
While remote work promised greater flexibility, emerging evidence suggests it can also function as an indoor anchor. By reducing the need to commute each day, many workers spend more of their day centered around the home, blurring the boundary between work and personal life and, for some, contributing to more isolated and sedentary routines.
The Most Nature-Accessible Cities

El Paso, Texas (Rank 50) records the nation's lowest Nature Deficit Index score. Frequently stereotyped as a harsh, inhospitable desert landscape, the city's boundary fades into the vast protected wilderness. Residents live just 7 miles from qualifying federal and state protected lands, making meaningful outdoor access part of everyday life rather than an occasional destination.
Supported by 19.6 percent parkland coverage, one of the nation's lowest work-from-home rates (7.8 percent), and just a single unhealthy air day last year, El Paso, alongside Albuquerque (Rank 49), shows that proximity to nature depends less on lush scenery than on thoughtful urban planning and everyday accessibility.
In this respect, these high-desert cities outperform many wealthier coastal metros that enjoy greener reputations but provide fewer practical opportunities to experience the outdoors.
A Radical Call for Rewilding
Modern psychological and neurological research confirms that regular contact with the natural world plays an important role in stress reduction, cognitive function, and emotional well-being.
When we design cities that prioritize automobiles over walkability, tolerate chronic air pollution, and leave people with fewer practical opportunities to spend time outdoors, we diminish everyday contact with nature.
The cities topping the Nature Deficit Index need to fundamentally reprioritize urban space. As Jane Jacobs argued decades ago, a successful city should be judged not only by its economic dynamism, but by how well it supports the everyday lives of its residents.
If American cities are to remain healthy, resilient places to live, they can no longer measure success solely by growth, density, or economic output.
They must also make room for nature.
They must be rewilded.
Methodology
The Nature Deficit Index is a composite ranking of the 50 most populous US cities by their structural barriers to nature contact. Higher scores indicate greater separation from the natural world. The index is built from five metrics, each normalized to a 0–100 scale (100 = worst), then combined using weighted summation.
Final Score Formula: Score = (Park Land × 0.25) + (Commute × 0.25) + (AQI × 0.20) + (WFH × 0.15) + (Distance × 0.15)

Study Limitations
CBSA-level AQI: Cities sharing a CBSA receive identical pollution scores.
WFH as proxy: Measures structural digital confinement but cannot measure whether remote workers spend more time outdoors.
Single-year AQI: 2023 was a relatively cleaner year for wildfire smoke; multi-year averaging would be more robust.
Non-ranked cities: Columbus, Indianapolis, and Las Vegas were not in the 2026 TPL ParkScore top 100, requiring use of ParkServe city data and 2025 ParkScore data respectively. These values may not be strictly comparable to the 2026 ParkScore methodology.
